Cannabis and Creativity! What’s the hype all about?

Can cannabis increase creativity? Do you feel a boost in your creative juices when you use cannabis?

According to a Wikileaf article the jury is still out on this subject and the creative effects of some cannabis strains are more tied to “Convergent” and “Divergent” thinking as supposed to creativity itself.

“A study from years back found that cannabis does not heighten creativity in its users. The study looked at two different processes: convergent and divergent thinking. Convergent thinking is solving a problem with one clear answer.

Divergent thinking is more abstract and involves a multitude of possible solutions. Will smoking this joint make me more creative?”

Yet scientifically-based publications, such Psychology Today Magazine tackled the subject a few years back with an article written by Dr.V. Krishna Kumar Ph.D., outlining studies that suggest that cannabis produces psychotomimetic symptoms, which in turn might lead to connecting seemingly unrelated concepts, an aspect of divergent thinking considered primary to creative thinking.

“A drug induced altered state of mind may indeed lead to breaking free from ordinary thinking and associations, thereby, increasing the likelihood of generating novel ideas or associations.”

More recently, Dr. Sebastian Marincolo Ph.D (Philosophy) said that the key is in knowing how to use cannabis to kick creative endeavors into high gear. In a Green Flower online course entitled “How To Use Cannabis to Unlock Your Creativity”, Marincolo explains:

“You need to know how to use it, otherwise cannabis might actually be very bad for your creative output. This is something that is absolutely crucial to the understanding of cannabis and creativity.”

The article details the ways in which cannabis can help with creativity including increased blood flow to the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe is thought to be a center for creativity and divergent thinking, as mentioned above.

“Already, tests among individuals with high creative intelligence have found that there is a strong association between superior creative performance and greater cerebral blood flow into this area.”
